From the opening poem of the book, `idle', in this fine collection of poetry by A. Razor, the reader is confronted by the poet's profound depth of wisdom:`the greatest gift ever given was dust, as it gave back
what was taken...'
The language of the poems is lucid, clean, the imagery almost familiar yet originally placed, making their combination all the more potent, concise, and sharp:
`swim or swallow
through the mud pit
the ghost of bed bugs past
haunt the restless dreams...
...trials by fire
that lead to
more trials by fire
life in shopping carts
full of broken living...'
(`shelter intake')
This is a poetry of irrevocable wounds, of pain and its myriad manifestations, of love and hope and a desire for something else on the horizon, yet is deeply rooted in the real.
Of the `being found', of the `finding of the other', and of the remaining, in spite of the displacement:
`she
keeps me
when the world
would have thrown me
away
so long ago'
(`My Girl (for Naima))
This is the work of a man who has suffered much, lived the `life less lived', and who has emerged, to grind down to the bones of it, and transfigure them into a real and lasting timeless beauty:
`I look at San Quentin hard & long, as I remember
The thankless giving up I did there...
...I have not been caught by guns & guards in the longest time
since I first became a man in that world...'
('Gratitude')
Razor understands the drama of the human condition, yet he is not a dramatist, his words are noble. He does not scream, but with a profusion of warmth delivers the heart and soul of his existence to the reader.
Yes, darkness will claim all, inevitably, but it is the intricacies and subtle gestures that really count in Razor's world, which I recommend you avail of, in this excellent book.

Small Catastrophes in a Big World A Razor 9781481089975 Books Reviews
I bought this book to help support a gritty little small publishing house after a I saw a request on FB, as I am a writer and believe aggressively in Karma! What a lovely little book of poetry by A. Razor. I am not from the mean streets of LA nor have I ever been incarcerated (well, almost never), but as is often the case with good poetry, the words and images feel universal. If you only purchase this book for the sneaky little gut punch of a poem that is "By The Side Of The Road", a poem that for me drew to the surface a tidbit of a poem long tucked away that goes something like this..."you may not remember your dreams, but your dreams remember you" or the straightforward and satisfying poem, "Death Finds Me Here in Santa Cruz", the purchase would be well worth it. Though several other poems in this book are equally enjoyable to read. Since A. Razor shares his words freely and free-ly over the internet, it is about time I purchased some of his work and will definitely add a few more to my bookshelf.
