For this once single professional woman, much of Kat’s journey making her way through the office politics and sorting out the goofy men was familiar and very funny. Good Story.
Before I start with my opening opinion I want to make it clear that I did enjoy this very witty and funny story. However…. I jumped over the Katland italic paragraphs. I couldn't seem to get into Kat's daydreaming scenarios. The daydreaming in Kat's head was way too much. The daydreaming did slow down, but then we had to read her repeated dream over and over. (I had to agree with Tina.... "Do you think it can ever be like in our dreams?"...."Uh, no. That's why they call them dreams.") I almost gave up when Kat sat down to read one of her aunt’s books. Why would an author want a reader to read a book within a book? I jumped over it and just kept going.
Then the story got better, the characters finally came to life, and I found the story was well written and very funny. So, I ended up enjoying it. I loved all the main and secondary characters, I loved that there was a hint of a ghost, and the relationship between Kat, Tina, and Juanita. I enjoyed Kat's bus rides with all the funny events. The scene with Kat’s boss sent me right to the internet to check out the apparatus. It was laugh out loud for me.
Best line in a scene….
"I read this article about a sleep study these doctors were doing. They noticed this interesting syndrome—several of the men were suffering numbness in one arm, just one. Turns out they were newlyweds." He kissed her on the back between the shoulder blades. "The sad thing was it generally went away after the first year." "Generally?" "Not always."
Kat. I struggled with Kat’s character. And, although the story with a girls Cinderella version of life was extremely realistic, Kat came across as an airheaded dimwit. But yet she was an outstanding project manager??
Cooper. Great guy, but there wasn’t enough character development for him to be my new book boyfriend.
When I got to the end and realized the author is a man, well I'm very impressed. I didn’t think a male author could write lovely romance stories. This author proved me wrong! Nothing steamy in this story, but it was very good without it. And, Obren Bokich is a very comedic author. Good read.
When we are little girls, we read the story of Cinderella and are enchanted. When we are growing girls, we recall the story of Cinderella and are hopeful. When we are all grown up, we read the story "The Cinderella Blues" and are caught up in a fantastic, fun fantasy once again. This is a truly fun read, will bring a smile to your face, and should be shared with girlfriends of all ages. I'm looking forward to more from Obren Bokich!
I dont normally read this genre, i picked it out for my in flight reading. I really liked it . Got me right away and had it read over the weekend, worth it for sure.
Amazing book, starts out as a romance bodice ripper and in two chapters you are some place else all together as main character Kat turns 30 and comes out of a 29 year stupor of arrested development, stuck in the fantasies of childhood and wondering why they don't work for a her as a woman. Rarely does one get to see a character grow in awareness of themselves and start to see the world of possibilities, then grasp them. This is a book rich in story content, two laugh out loud grab your sides bellowing scenes, so totally unexpected -- never seen in a book before. Then there is LA as you have never seen it as well, the view from a City bus, the hidden away craftsmen/bungalow homes and the Hollywood Bowl moment that could exist in any decade since the 30's. Bokitch is a man who has transcended gender and caught what is human and real in every young woman coming into true adulthood and in Kat's case, unsaid truths, blatant lies and omissions from her past that finally clear away the fog that had her craving the life of a pirate's wrench in her opening fanatsy. A Good Read, indeed.
While I thought the book started a little slow, with too many 'dreams' (and wondered if the entire book would be that way), I kept reading and was REALLY glad I did!
The characters and story are really well developed, and once I truly started reading, I couldn't put it down!
I loved how the book ended too. Great wrap up!
I normally am a sci-fi/fantasy reader, Kitty the Werewolf, Parasol Protectorate, Temeraire books, etc...but I truly enjoyed this book.
I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good book!
