Our friends from Sunniva's STEWie lab are back… After returning from almost certain death in Pompeii and other death zones, life is back to normal for Julia, Nate, Abigail and the rest of the crew. That is, as normal as life can be when you live and work around a time machine. This is the third novel by Neve Maslakovic, and the second in the “Incident” series.
Let’s cut to the chase… Did I like the book? Yes, definitely. Did I like it more then the first two of Neve’s books? No, not really. Here is the problem that I have with books in a series: Things are a bit repetitive. Take the Dan Brown books for example. I read the first four in the order in which they were published. The first one was a bit rough as far as style goes, but it was a good story, the second one was written much better, but the story seemed familiar. By the third one I knew what to expect, and after the fourth one I gave up.
I hope that Neve’s books will grip my attention for a bit longer... Here is the experience I had with her three books so far: I loved Ducks&Universes - it was a great story. What’s not to love about bifurcating universes?!? It was a fresh story. The Incident series is about time travel, not quite as fresh, but whenever you let an engineer tell you a time travel story, there are always some new angles to be an old story.
That brings us to the "Runestone Incident". If you’ve read the “Far Time Incident”, you already know the cast, you know about how time travel works with STEWie, and you know in what a mess one can get when being stranded in time. If this is all new to you, Neve is giving you a quick introduction into all this, so you are not left behind. I would still recommend to start with #1 in the series, just to get a better introduction to the cast, but if you don’t have the time, dive right into #2. Could this first section of the book been a bit shorter for readers coming to this book via the “Far Time Incident”? Certainly, but I was not too bothered by a quick refresher in time travel in the STEWie environment.
It would not be a book in the “Incident” series, if everything that’s happening is proper and legal - this time, our time traveling crime fighters are taking their investigations to the time of the Vikings, but they stay close to home in Minnesota. I am not going to repeat the book description here, I’ll just say that the story prompted me to look up certain details and back stories online. So in addition to having a few entertaining evenings with the book, I learned a bit about American history.
It’s a good story with a few twists, it does not get boring.
I am looking forward to the next "Incident" book.

I did not enjoy this book as much as i did the first in the series. It was entertaining, but a little juvenile - particularly in the treatment of the 'soon to be ex' husband. I think the subject matter was also a little obscure in that where/if/why the vikings traveled in North America/Greenland isn't that interesting.
Although her first book started out as a murder mystery .. ended up with no dead body, this time around started off as a chase hunt type of mystery .. & ended up with a body .. she always seems to surprise with this time travel incident series. Also am enticed by the slow but interesting romance intertwined within.
Very exciting with a few drawn out parts. Great to see the characters staying consistent. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I gave it four stars because it has a good story line and there is no gratuitous violence or sex. This can be enjoyed by pre-teens on up. I enjoyed her first book more because it was more of a mystery. It is not necessary to read her first book to understand 'The Rune Stone Incident'. She fills in the back story as part of the plot. It is not really about the Vikings. I t renews the questions about the discovery of Vinland. Anyone who enjoys the time travel theme would like this. It is a light quick read, great for summer reading.
This is the 2nd book in a series , but the author does well at bringing the reader up to speed. The reader is along for a story that involves an ex spouse using blackmail to try to get a turn in the time travel machine, a missing person, and history that has long been disputed and begs for proof either way.
This story continues in a series from the first book, with even more colorful characters, a great spirit of adventure, an almost believable time-travel scenario with plans, backup plans, rules and dangers, good dialogue, a little humor and a touch of romance. Truly excellent.
Just finished The Runestone Incident and loved it! I'm not sure I've ever read another SF author who has the ability to successfully base the most dramatic of futuristic concepts in the most real, everyday setting of American life. I mean, maybe MIT, but more likely a clandestine shadow government, off-the-books experimental time travel lab...that's the Hollywood version of drama we are all force fed. To watch a modest mid-western college deal with all the complications of such a discovery is a truly delightful reading experience. I've never met any genius scientists who were swept up by the government and ensconced in secret brain trust laboratories no one ever sees or even knowingly passes by in their car. Sure, they probably exist in some form or another, but the average reader is probably just like me and can't relate to any of. But St. Sunniva, that I get. I went to a small college in western Pennsylvania that chugs along, day after day, doing its job right here in the real world, so I can almost see the STEWie lab downstairs in the same Science & Engineering building where I attended lectures. Anyone who's spent four or more years at college will surely love this mystery, but I think this delightful time travel mystery will appeal to any reader who appreciates real life more than the Hollywood version!
