The town of Titan Falls, New Hampshire is ruled by its paper mill. The mill has always been a powerful fixture in the town and it still employs most of the men. Its success or failure has a direct effect on the well-being of the town, and its byproducts have tainted the Androscoggin River for years, certainly leading to a number of deaths and illnesses. One night a tragic bus accident rocks the town, holding two families in its sway—the McCallisters, who run the mill, and the ne'er-do-well Snows, who had only recently returned to Titan Falls and now live on its fringes. When Zeke Snow is accused of causing the accident despite his innocence, his younger sister, Mercy, is determined to prove his innocence, while starting to embrace the mysterious gifts that have been handed down through generations of women in her family. All Mercy wants is normalcy, but trouble and scandal seem to follow her family wherever it goes.
June McCallister, wife of the mill's owner, reinvented herself from the poor Florida girl she once was to the woman whose actions are followed by everyone in town. When she discovers some facts about the night of the accident, and how her own family was far more involved in events than anyone knows, she is determined to protect her husband and her son at any cost, no matter what it takes—intimidation, innuendo, bribery, lies, even putting others at risk. June doesn't really want to know the full truth, about the accident or the Snows' ancestor, Gert, whose skeleton was uncovered the night of the accident, and to whom her husband's family may very well be linked.
Mercy Snow is a book with a gothic feel. It's one where no one is quite what they seem, and there are more secrets than truths. It's a story about a town where the power of some has held dominion over others, no matter what the cost, and no one wants to be the one to speak out or ask questions. It's also a story about the strength of familial relationships and all that we'll do to protect the ones we love.
This was an interesting and compelling book, and Tiffany Baker has a very evocative use of language. I wished there were a few more surprises in this book than there were; I felt as if once I got a handle on the plot and where it was going I was able to fairly accurately predict how the story would resolve itself. I also don't particularly enjoy books or movies where one character or group of characters hold all the cards and can manipulate everyone into doing what they want, even though it's wrong, although I know this happens in real life. But in the end, the star of this book is Baker's storytelling ability and the town of Titan Falls itself, both of which made the book worth reading.

Mercy Snow A Novel Tiffany Baker Books Reviews
In Titan Falls, a small New England community, residents are distrustful of outsiders. Even with money, power and twenty years of marriage to the owner of the paper mill, non-native June McAllister knows she’s still not fully accepted. When the latest generation of Snows shows up in a ratty RV to live on the land of their estranged and deceased father, townspeople aren’t happy.
One night, a reckless driver causes a fatal accident. Just down the road, Zeke Snow’s old truck is crashed into a tree, and Zeke is nowhere to be found. What appears to be a clear crime becomes much, much more complicated, and past secrets abound.
Tiffany Baker is a talented writer who spins a complex plot as she gradually reveals the layered lives of characters who all have their share of imperfections and sins. She turns out beautifully crafted sentences that give larger meaning to simple actions. One example “…silence fell over the room as the women took their needles, bent their heads, and began to stitch, their needles pricking, prying, and then just as quickly closing the little holes they were making in the fabric of one another’s lives.”
As I read, I wavered on the rating to give "Mercy Snow." The mystical aspects of the story reminded me of Latin American magical realism, but at times it got a little too out there for me. I anticipated some plot developments, although there were some good surprises. Finally, I couldn’t buy the ending for one character. But ultimately, I went with five stars because there is so much that I liked about the book, and when I finished the last page, I knew this was a novel that I won’t forget for a long time.
"I don't know why that lady's ghost is upset. It just is. Something about the river, I think. (Tiffany Baker)
Author, Tiffany Baker, has once again created a heart wrenching novel that is mysterious, spellbinding and powerful. She weaves her story with her lyrical and magical style of writing. The characters will linger in your memory...
Mercy Snow is on a mission, to right the wrongs of an accident which occurred one Winter night on Devil's Slide Road. The Snow family have always been looked down upon by the citizens of Titan Falls. Mercy has an uphill battle with those in power to right a horrendous wrong. It's a tall order for a nineteen year old girl.
In the small New Hampshire community of Titan Falls there are secrets that have been kept and are being kept but eventually like many hidden secrets they become unearthed. They've now been stirred up & Mercy Snow is just the persistent person to follow her mission through til the very end.
What do a few of the townsfolk of Titan Falls know and what are they hiding --- like one does when escaping behind a mask? Mystery surrounds Titan Falls as their Androscoggin River keeps a tight grip around this small river town hamlet.
Don't miss out on this haunting exquisite story! It had me in tears by the end.
"Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive." (Sir Walter Scott)
I once spent a week vacation in the Berlin area of NH. My son was dating a girl from the area and we were going to meet her parents. This novel gave a wonderful picture of that area, a small close-knit community in an old mill and logging town. One afternoon we watched the loggers run huge logs down the Androscoggin River. We talked with people from the area when we visited a town festival and I could easily picture these characters from the novel back in that setting. I liked the little bit of suspense in the novel..........why the red mitten was found where it was. I wondered whose fault the crash was and at what point in the book we,d find out. The ending was satisfying and closed well. Some passages were quite descriptive and I felt I really got to know the main ones. all in all, I am glad I met Mercy Snow and the other people in berlin NH. It was definitely worth reading.
