When an elderly Yorkshire businessman is brutally killed in a quiet London side-street, the murder investigation throws together Detective Inspector John McLeish and high-flying Department of Trade and Industry civil servant Francesca Wilson. Death’s Bright Angel would be one of the first crime novels to set the traditional English detective story against an authentic background of business and government intervention and deservedly won the Crime Writers’ Association’s John Creasey Award for best debut of 1988. The McLeish/Wilson relationship was to flourish romantically over a series of seven books, winning many loyal fans in the UK and the USA.

Like many of Janet Neel's Francesca Wilson series, this plot involves mechanations within the British government. I sometimes do not understand the positions referred to and the chains of command. That said, I always understand the situations into Francesca is forced. I enjoy following her love affair with John McLeish, sympathize with her reluctance to commit, adore the way she interacts with her four younger brothers (one of whom is a "rock star.") This is the first book in this series, though the third one I've read, which brought me to the love affair in a backward manner. Each book stands well alone, however, and I do plan to read the rest. The books are intricately plotted and very well characterized.Product details

Death Bright Angel edition by Janet Neel Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
We are informed, courtesy of the Internet, that "Janet Neel is the nom de plume of Baroness (Janet) Cohen of Pimlico, who sits as a Labour peer in the House of Lords." Unfortunately, this seems to be keeping her far too busy of late, leaving her fans bereft of new entries in this wonderful series for lo these many years. Now that the first is back in print, perhaps others will join me in a chorus inspired by Oliver Twist - "Please, ma'am, might we have some more?" The characters are distinctive and memorable, and the writing is far above par - remniscent of Ngaio Marsh. More, please!
I'm so glad to see this book back in print. I think it's one of the best-written and most interesting mysteries that I've read in a long time.
Inspector John MacLeish of the Metropolitant Police is called in to investigate a particular brutal murder. At first glance, the murder appears to be the result of a mugging, but the sheer savagery of the crime causes MacLeish to suspect that there is a more personal motive behind the killing. This leads MacLeish to Yorkshire and the company that the victim worked for, the financially-troubled Britex. It seems a longshot, though, that the murder has anything to do with Britex.
Eventually, MacLeish crosses paths with Francesca Wilson, a civil servant engaged in evaluating a government rescue of Britex and it's 1400 jobs.
The brilliant Francesca has her own problems, balancing a challenging career, being a surrogate mother to her four troublesome younger brothers, and a disasterous love life. MacLeish is instantly smitten with her and they soon begin a relationship. This relationship may be the only thing that saves Francesca as she unwittingly threatens the killer.
This is a hard book to describe. It's very much a police procedural, with MacLeish doing all the detective work. There are no "gifted amateur detectives" in this book. Francesca's interesting story runs separately from John's investigation and yet often parallels it. The double fascination in this book is the glimpse it affords of the inner workings of the British civil services. I have no idea if the information is factual, but it certainly sounds convincing.
The murderer is not terribly hard to identify once you know all the characters, but the quality of the writing and the characterizations make this book one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys police procedurals, particularly British police procedurals.
Fantastic
A wonderful read - beautifully written and well paced,
Janet Neel, according to the flyleaf, is English, graduated university (Oxford, was it), went to America to design war games, returned to Engliand, opened a couple of restaurants and is a businesswoman. and mother of three. So when the kids were napping or during tea breaks, she dashed off a book.. The bio alone made me jealous and a little suspicious. Not to worry. Consistent with being an overachiever, she does a creditable job, and a piece better than many first novelists.
An accountant for a troubled firm is murdered during a visit to London, and then more or less forgotten about for a while as the rest of the plot elements are set up The firm is a textile manufacturer (dubbed eiyj the same name as a very successful company in the US--that deals in textiles) lead by Peter Hampton. Her Majesty's government has set up a civil service department charged with helping, iif possible, or ending struggling enterprises. The team assigned to our firm is led by Henry but decorated by Francesca, a lively, smart, a bit scattered, and of course lovely mainstay of the team who is key to keeping it effective. There is a very tall detective investigating the murder and attracted by Francesca.
If my tongue was in my cheek a bit for the description, let me say that if I wrote a first novel like Death's Bright Angel , I would be pretty proud of myself It is often charming, always interesting, and the characters are more developed, and believable, than the tired old reader might have expected. There is no sense to the title and not a lot in the mechanism that animates the murderer...but these are small cavils. This is only slightly predictable and a light and fun way to spend a rainy afternoon. After a bit of tension, the right boy gets the right girl, the bad guys get their just desserts and nearly all of the violence if off stage. Ms Neel makes a bit much of our heroine being a woman in a man's world. Francesca is very capable but also very girly. I don't see her holding down a serious position,in the real world, but that could just be me. I enjoyed the book .and suspect anyone enjoying a little light murder would as well. In fact, if Ms. Neel wrote another book, I'd read it.
Even if I suspect the author's bio is ;pulling our leg. just a bit, .
This is the first and best of a mystery series featuring not only a mystery but improbably a look in to the world of choral singing in Britain and government bureaucrazcy. There are appealing characters, and nice touches of humor without falling into the "cozy" category
